Tysoe Parish Council is increasing the number of areas in the village to be managed for a richer variety of wildflowers and wildlife.
Four new areas have been marked out with temporary posts. For the rest of this season, these will not be mown, to see what plants naturally come up. In the Autumn, these will then be sown with Yellow Rattle, which suppresses some of the grass and allows more room for other wildflower species to thrive.
The new areas are:
- At the entrance to Poolgate – the ditch at the back is already full of a wide variety of species. This will be extended forward. The front will still be mown for highways visibility, and a tree and some crocuses will be planted this Autumn. The Dead Hedge already in the private land behind adds to the habitat types here.
- Around the Mulberry Tree on the entrance to Old Tree Lane – the posts and wire around the Mulberry Tree are to be removed as the tree is well-established now. The branches of the tree naturally swoop down to the ground, so the wildflowers will be around the spreading branches.
- At the corner of Badger’s Lane – violets seem to grow well here already, but what else will?
- A strip along the back of the Football Field – we ask dog owners to kindly refrain from letting their dogs poo in any of the longer grass around the edges of the football and recreation fields, as children regularly play here.
Along with the existing Wildflower Areas, these will make for a more Wildlife Friendly alternative to taking part in ‘No Mow May’.
