    Information on CCTV in Tysoe

The Parish Council has recently received enquiries raising concerns about a number of security cameras in Tysoe which may be recording people using public highways, including public footpaths.

It is fully understandable that residents wish to protect themselves and their property.  However, we would like to ensure all residents are aware that if cameras are recording members of the public using public highways, then Data Protection rules may apply which could include:

    • Cameras being positioned to minimise the coverage of public footpaths, as far as possible
    • Filters or privacy blockers being considered to block out coverage of public footpaths, if possible
    • Signage being installed that indicates CCTV is in operation and explaining who to contact regarding the footage
    • Footage being stored securely and only accessible by people who need to access it
    • Footage being deleted regularly or automatically, or both
    • Camera owners being able to respond appropriately to a request for a copy of the footage, or deletion of the footage from people who appear in it
    • Consideration being given to disabling microphones to avoid capturing private conversations
    • Registering with the Information Commissioner’s Office as a data controller.

Camera installers will be able to advise on this if necessary.  Information can also be found on the website of the Information Commissioner’s Office, www.ico.org.uk, or by contacting them on 0303 123 1113

If you are concerned about being filmed on a public highway, then the Information Commissioner’s Office can also advise, as the Parish Council does not have the power to enforce data control laws or regulate security cameras owned by private residents, and any Subject Access Requests (for copies of footage or deletion of it etc.) must be made by the person being filmed.
